There are two main civil courts in the English legal system: the County Court and the High Court.
Less complex cases and those involving lower monetary value are heard by judges in the County Court. This court deals with the majority of tort and contract cases, as well as other matters, such as bankruptcy and insolvency. Cases are heard by circuit judges (dealing with the most important cases) or district judges, both of whom are full-time judges. Straightforward cases are heard by a deputy district judge or recorder, who sit on a part-time basis.
