Mike Grant

I have been the medical sciences editor of BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES REVIEW since its inception. Now that I am about to leave the editorial board, I have been reflecting on my enjoyable career.

I studied A-level chemistry, physics and maths. A degree in chemistry seemed a logical next step but then I read about the developing discipline of biochemistry, which sought to explain life in chemical terms. I discovered that the Faculty of Technology in the University of Manchester was creating a Department of Biochemistry. I joined the first intake, even though I’d never had a single biology lesson. Organic chemistry proved interesting, and maths was okay, but I found the biology tough. Self-education was the only solution and it became a life-skill that has underpinned my whole career as an academic research scientist.
