S tem cells are distinctive from other cell types. They have the potential to self-renew, sometimes indefinitely, and can become many different cell types in the body. Differentiated cells, such as those found in human organs, cannot normally produce all the different cell types found in the whole body. The ability of a stem cell to become another cell type is referred to as potency.
