Biomarkers in prostate cancer

The prostate is a small gland found in mammals. It is responsible for the production of semen. The gland is highly susceptible to inflammation, which has been implicated in the development of cancer. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the UK, accounting for approximately 11900 deaths each year.

A biomarker is a term given to any type of biological molecule or characteristic that can be measured to reflect a disease or a physiological state. For example, blood pressure is a biomarker. In cancer, measuring biomarkers is useful for accurate diagnosis and prognosis, as well as in furthering our understanding of disease mechanisms within the cancer cells. In our laboratory we are investigating the roles of two separate proteins in driving prostate cancer progression, together with their usefulness as biomarkers.
