Mike Delaney

Making a career in football

By adopting an entrepreneurial approach and learning how to market himself, Mike Delaney has achieved his goal of making a career out of his lifelong passion for football

Mike meets French football legend Zinedine Zidane

When Mike left school he wanted a career in football. While training as a football coach, he signed up to a sports modelling agency to supplement his income. It was his talent performing football skills that made him stand out in castings and he landed his first role in a commercial for Adidas. This also led to him being talent spotted by former international footballer Hansi Müller, who gave him the opportunity to play professional football in Germany.

After the initial excitement and a couple of years in the game, Mike realised that pro football was not for him. He did not feel free to make his own decisions and really struggled when managers ‘blew their top’ in the changing room without giving constructive criticism. Walking away from a fantastic career opportunity was a difficult decision to make but Mike remained determined to achieve his original goal and looked for other career options within football.
