What killed Kodak?

The point-and-shoot camera is becoming a rare sight. Instead most of us are snapping photographs with our mobile phones and — judging by my college’s recent trip to New York — most people would rather do this than carry a camera around with them.

In the 1990s the US company Kodak was one of the world’s most famous and valuable brands. In 1976 Kodak had a monopoly in the market for cameras and camera film, with 90% of film sales and 85% of camera sales in the USA. Yet in January 2012 Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection, a declaration that it was in serious financial trouble.
