Superdry

Going from a Cheltenham market stall in 1985 to a £475 million business may sound too good to be true, but that is exactly what has happened to the fashion retailer Julian Dunkerton. After starting out selling other companies’ clothes, Dunkerton developed the Cult Clothing brand with Ian Hibbs. Aimed at students, the Cult Clothing business grew to around 25 stores, mainly in university towns and cities.

One of the issues when working within the fashion industry is how quickly the trends change and how certain brands become popular for a season and then fade away. In 2003 Dunkerton teamed up with designer James Holder, who had founded the Bench brand, to create the Superdry brand.
