Team Sky

In pursuit of perfection

Luke Perry looks at the business behind sporting success

The sport of cycling is a fascinating industry that has been radically changed over the last 5 years by the emergence of Team Sky and its bold claim that its would win a Tour de France. Such a bold strategic mission statement was met with scorn and ridicule initially, but the team recently secured its third Tour de France title.

Not all stakeholders were happy with the way the team started to dominate the sport, and the mood of the industry turned to envy and anger. During the 2015 Tour de France Team Sky riders were spat at, punched and had urine thrown on them. Rumours about doping may have also played a part in this, though Team Sky has never been found guilty of any offence and is committed to distancing itself from anyone associated with doping.
