Wagamama

Phil Waterhouse looks at how Wagamama has stayed successful despite the pressures on the restaurant industry

I first became aware of Wagamama at the end of my first year of teaching. I had been invited to spend the day at the head office of Whitbread in Luton along with other teachers as they explained how we could utilise their latest venture (a little known coffee chain by the name of Costa Coffee) in our lessons as a good case study for our students.

At the time, Whitbread owned or had a stake in a variety of food retail chains such as Pizza Hut, Chiquito and TGI Fridays. One of the delegates asked whether there was another kind of food that the company was interested in developing, and the answer that came back was Wagamama.
