Ghana

The next economic success story?

Ghana is predicted to be one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa over the next few decades. Mimi Osew reviews the reasons for this growth, assessing Ghana’s export strengths and looking at factors that might hamper its development

Accra, the capital of Ghana

The population of Africa is predicted to reach 2.5 billion by 2050. By the end of the century, Africa is projected to have a larger population than India, China, USA and Europe combined. This will offer huge economic possibilities for businesses looking for an untapped market. Ghana is eager to establish itself as the gateway to the west African market.

Ghana has one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted that Ghana grew faster than any other economy in 2019 (6.1%), and estimated that gross domestic product (GDP) in the same year would grow by 8.8%. This has been revised down to a projected growth rate of 6.2% for 2022 in response to the effects of Covid-19 on the Ghanaian economy.
