Phil Waterhouse examines the business careers of his friends from university

It has dawned on me that it is 30 years since I completed my A-levels and was just about to start my degree in economics. Little did I realise at the time that the next 30 years would see the start-up of some of the largest organisations in the world, demonstrating the rapid pace at which the business world moves. Of the ten largest companies in the world in 1992 by market cap, none now feature in this list. Amazon, Google, Tesla and Facebook hadn’t even been founded.

In the next three issues of BUSINESS REVIEW I want to focus on businesses that friends of mine from university are now involved with. While some of my friends have ended up working with some of the multinational giants that you are familiar with, most of them ended up working in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their careers will hopefully get across the mantra that I share with my students — there is money to be made everywhere. The Mark Zuckerbergs and Jeff Bezos of the world are the leaders and entrepreneurs we hear about all the time, but arguably just as interesting are the stories of the entrepreneurs operating at a smaller scale.
