Ten things you need to know about European businesses

IN BRIEF Old v. new

We have all probably made commitments at some point in our lives to get fitter. The number of classes on offer at local gyms are plentiful. However, if you notice that your local gym has a Jazzercise option it might surprise you to know that the company started over 50 years ago in 1969 and is still going strong. Jazzercise have over 8000 global franchises and over 32,000 classes are taught each week. The business is worth US$73 million a year and has managed to grow and evolve its offerings to take in the latest trends. These days sessions involve high-intensity training as well as Yoga and Pilates.

However, the success of the brand has been its ability to see where the market is going and offer both face-to-face and digital versions of their product. They have grown their online subscription model to over 60,000 active users. This product line was launched pre-pandemic and was aptly timed as the physical spaces were forced to shut down. One of the key aspects of the business model is maintaining affordable prices as well as opening franchises in smaller towns and suburbs that tend to be overlooked by the larger fitness chains.
