This In Pictures can be used to expand your knowledge of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which is present on most chemistry specifications.

The technique of nuclear magnetic imaging is one you may not have heard of. This is not because it is an uncommon technique, but because its name was subsequently altered after its introduction in the 1970s — to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Most people have heard of this procedure due to it being a powerful tool in the world of modern medicine. The technique is non-invasive and doesn’t use potentially damaging radiation (such as X-rays). The reason that it was renamed is because of the public’s general mistrust of the word ‘nuclear’ and its implications to the patient. Since the first scan on a live person in 1977, MRI has developed dramatically and still aids countless medical diagnoses across the world.
