No matter how carefully you take measurements there will always be errors. You can take steps to minimise these errors, in your choice of apparatus and the care you take, but they cannot be totally eliminated. An understanding of errors and how to treat them is important if you want to have confidence in your scientific findings. There have to be scientific standards for the units used in measurement and the organisation that takes responsibility for this is the Bureau International de Poids et Mesures.
