The unusual properties of water ice, arising from the way in which the molecules hydrogen bond within crystal structures, can be illustrated with a phase diagram. The open structure of ice at atmospheric pressure gives rise to the surprisingly low density of the solid compared to the liquid, resulting in ice floating on water. The melting point of water can decrease as the pressure increases (up to a point).
