You can’t beat beetroot

What is the first thing you think of when you read the word ‘beetroot’? The pickled cubes you avoid at the salad buffet? The vegetable that turns the toilet bowl pink? Or perhaps it is one of your favourite foods. However, if you are a keen sportsperson or musician, new research might soon persuade you to include beetroot juice in your diet, whether or not you are a fan.

Research suggests that concentrated beetroot juice shots can increase the time divers can hold their breath and improve cyclists’ performance. Marathon runner Helen Decker and swimmer Ian Hulme are already consuming concentrated beetroot juice shots before competing, and other elite athletes may soon follow suit to avoid being at a disadvantage.
