Feeling blue

Lobster rarities

The average lobster has a mottled brown exoskeleton, keeping it safely camouflaged on the sea floor. But every now and then we find a bright blue lobster. What’s going on?

It is thought that one in 5000 lobsters is born blue, but because blue lobsters are so conspicuous, most are eaten by predators when they are young. Those that survive tend to do so by acting more aggressively to compensate for the lack of camouflage. Fortunately for the blue rarities, if they are caught in a lobster pot they are more likely to find themselves in an aquarium than on a dinner plate.
