Flavones are a type of antioxidant, which protect cells from damage by free radicals and hydrogen peroxide. They are currently being investigated in the treatment and prevention of cancer. Flavonols help protect DNA from mutations by inhibiting damaging molecules from binding to DNA.

But why are they so important? Flavones are a type of antioxidant, which means that they donate electrons to unstable free radical species and reactive oxidising agents, such as hydrogen peroxide, which are toxic in the body. Free radicals can damage cells by taking electrons from other sources in the cell, causing a domino effect.
