How to breathe on Mars

Perseverance landed in the Jezero Crater on 18 February 2021, following a 203-day journey to Mars. NASA scientists believe that over 3.5 billion years ago, the Jezero Crater was a lake.

There is some amazing chemistry equipment aboard Perseverance (see also p. 34), all contained in a space about the same size as an average-sized car. MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-situ Resource Utilization Experiment) is a piece of equipment on the rover that can convert carbon dioxide, the Martian atmosphere’s most abundant compound, into oxygen (Figure 1). The tests that MOXIE will complete on the Perseverance mission will determine whether this is a viable method for making oxygen on Mars for future manned missions.
