The Millennium Development Goals: midlife crisis?

Economic Review

Volume 27 Number 2 November 2009

The recession that has hit the UK and other nations has resulted in rising unemployment and job losses around the country. The loss of 625 jobs on the Isle of Wight initiated a sit-in and protests, including demonstrations in neighbouring Southampton. The job losses made the headlines because they resulted from the closure of a wind turbine factory, and thus caught the attention of people concerned about climate change.

Indeed, the protests coincided with an article in The Economist warning that the UK was heading for a crisis in its energy generation market and forecasting that electricity blackouts would become routine by 2013–16 because of the need to decommission a number of ageing generation plants.
