Information matters

With the arrival of the internet, information is available to an extent that could not have been imagined even 10 years ago. Peter Smith explores the economic importance of information.

For me — and I suspect for many other people — the most irritating advertisement of 2009 was Gio Compario, the Gocompare tenor. Unfortunately, he continued to appear on our television screens well into 2010. The advertisment was essentially about offering information. Some companies responded by highlighting the fact that they do not appear on price comparison websites.

Why should information be so valuable? And what would happen if information were to be less widely available or available to some groups of people but not to others?
