Country U is classified by the World Bank as a lower middle-income country, with GNI per capita of US$2,840 in 2008; and by the United Nations as a medium human development country. Country U has a population of around 67 million — just a little higher than the UK — but its land area is twice that of the UK. Approximately 30% of the population lives in the rural areas.

As Figure 1 shows, Country U has undergone a structural transformation since 1960. You can see that in 1960, more than a third of GDP came from the agricultural sector, and only 13% from manufacturing activity. By 2008 this balance had changed, with only 12% of GDP coming from agriculture and 35% from manufacturing.
