Country C is classified by the World Bank as a lower middle-income country, with GNI per capita of US$1,180 in 2010, and as a low human development country by the United Nations. In 2011, the human development index (HDI) was 0.459 in Country C, and it was ranked 156 out of 187 countries on this measure. Country C has a large population of around 158 million. Approximately half of the population live in rural areas.

Country C has been hampered because it has a very diverse population with about 200 ethnic groups and approximately 500 indigenous languages. The imposition of Islamic law in a number of states in the north of the country caused thousands of Christians to flee.
