What motivates people to work harder?

What motivates people in their jobs? Pay is, of course, the first thing that comes to mind. For a lucky few, such as professional athletes and musicians, a job and a hobby may coincide, but for the vast majority of us — a job is a way to earn a living. However, there are many other reasons behind the effort that people put into their work every day. In particular, for certain types of workers — besides extrinsic rewards like bonuses or promotions — an important motivation is a concern about the social cause pursued by the organisation that they work for, or a sense of altruism towards the welfare of a third party, who is the recipient of a good or service being produced in their workplace.
