Country M is classified by the World Bank as a low-income country, with GNI per capita of US$1,040 in 2012 ($1,920 in PPP terms). Its human development index of 0.485 places it in the low human development category, ranking 163 out of 187 countries in the world.

Country M had a population of around 14.1 million in 2013, of which about 57% lived in rural areas. Its key exports are groundnuts, fishing and phosphates. Country M has a 19-km exclusive fishing zone around its coastline, but has struggled to enforce it.
