Whether you want a ticket for a train journey or a seat at the theatre, you may find yourself facing an array of possible prices. How does this come about? Peter Smith investigates

I knew that I needed to travel from Southampton to Manchester on a particular day, so I checked times of trains and fares for the journey. For my chosen journey, I faced a choice between several different prices for a single journey, ranging from £57 to £305.
