The tourism industry in the UK

The tourism industry has grown significantly over the past few decades. Paul Turner of Loughborough University investigates what changes in the industry can tell us about the state of the economy

The tourist industry has proved to be one of the great success stories of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. In the mid-twentieth century foreign travel was largely restricted to the rich elite. By the end of the century, however, the advent of cheap air travel and the development of the package holiday had led to the foreign holiday becoming a staple item of expenditure for many households.

This expansion has continued into the twentyfirst century with the result that the tourist industry is now a major source of foreign exchange earnings for many countries and is often one of their leading ‘export’ industries.
