The population of a country changes slowly through time, but both the size and the structure of the population affect the economy in the long run. Population growth can increase pressure on resources, in particular in providing education and healthcare for the young. However, in the longer term, population growth can lead to an increase in the size of the workforce. The age structure of the population affects the way in which resources need to be allocated in providing healthcare for the elderly and education for the young.
