Making your mark in marketing

Are you creative and analytical, and do you thrive in fast-paced environments? Lydia Onyett explains how you might develop your English skills into a career in marketing

When you think of marketing, do you picture Mad Men’s Don Draper crafting slogans in the boardroom? If so, think again. In 2018, working in ‘marketing and communications’ involves much more than people in suits selling things to other people in suits. Marketing is an exciting, dynamic and challenging career, and studying English at A-level or degree level can help you develop crucial skills for success in this competitive field.

Whether you are writing creatively or thinking critically, developing a persuasive argument or devising, researching and executing literary essays and presentations, studying English is an excellent training ground for future marketeers. Marketeers think imaginatively and strategically to spot customer needs, shape innovative products, and deliver effective communications campaigns that get the right message to the right audience at the right time. They work to achieve a variety of goals, such as increasing product sales, raising brand awareness, improving customer experience or enhancing an organisation’s reputation.
