NEW HORIZONS: CENTREPIECE

The global geography of internal migration

This Centrepiece presents data on internal displacements from the 2022 World Migration Report

The World Migration Report (WMR) has been published every 2 years since 2000 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Human migration is one of the most critical issues of our times. It is also one of the most heavily politicised, so there is a need for rigorous and objective information from evidence-based research.

The United Nations has estimated that there were some 281 million international migrants in 2020. This is approximately 3.6% of global population, meaning that most people stay in the country of their birth. Successive World Migration Reports have shown that most migration takes place within countries (known as internal displacements), but even these movements have fallen during the Covid-19 pandemic.
