NEW HORIZONS: THE BIG PICTURE

Artificial snow in the Alps

More than half of Switzerland’s ski resorts are now only viable with artificial snow. From Colorado to Davos, climate warming and decreasing snowfall represent existential threats to the multi-billion dollar skiing industry and the regional economies it sustains.

Snow cannons mix water with compressed air to create fine water droplets which freeze when sprayed into cold mountain air (usually at night when temperatures are colder). Artificial snow is denser than natural snow and creates a harder and faster surface.
