GEOGRAPHY WORKS NEW HORIZONS

Public policy and urban agriculture

I studied geography at university from 2012 to 2015. It was my worst A-level result, so obviously, I chose to do a degree in it — maybe that says something about my love of the subject! I grew up in a West Devon village of 120 people, and so moving to university in a big city undoubtedly shaped my specific areas of geographical interest: cities and sustainability, with a particular focus on urban agriculture.

When I left university, I was convinced I wanted to work around sustainability and urban agriculture. The issue with working in urban agriculture in the UK in 2015 was that it was (and still is) a very small, emerging sector and there weren’t many roles and positions to apply for. I applied for a few jobs in the renewables sector before deciding to apply to Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s graduate scheme. The Combined Authority had never run a graduate programme before and so it was highly competitive — just over 200 applications for two roles — but, amazingly, I was successful and became the first graduate trainee that GMCA had ever had.
