As the queen gazed proudly at the flyover of Buckingham Palace by veteran aircraft from the Second World War during the recent Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the crowds below cheered loudly. Some of those gathered in the Mall also saluted the Spitfires and the Hurricane which accompanied the Lancaster bomber. It is difficult to think of any other military aircraft that have such a place in a nation’s heart as those fighters which emerged victorious in the Battle of Britain. After all, it was this clash between the Luftwaffe and the RAF that first postponed, then finally led to the abandonment of, the German invasion of Britain.
