The American Civil War ended in 1865 with victory for Unionist forces. The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments promised equal rights to all Americans. Unfortunately, the Southern states that had been defeated in war remained determined to prevent African Americans from achieving this. A series of ‘Jim Crow’ laws was brought in (www.tinyurl.com/6cpedd) and black Americans were effectively segregated in the Southern states.
