Source A Gustav Stresemann

The death of Gustav Stresemann, foreign minister of Weimar Germany, in 1929 is one of the great what-ifs of modern world history. If Stresemann had not died of a heart attack on 3 October 1929, but instead had lived, would Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP have seized power in 1933?

Gustav Stresemann was born in Berlin on 10 May 1878. He attended universities in Berlin and Leipzig and after graduation became a successful businessman. In 1903 he joined the National Liberal Party and in 1908 he was elected to the Reichstag.
