The car was travelling along a quiet forest road near Torun in northern Poland at around 10 p.m. on 19 October 1984. A young priest from Warsaw, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko (pronounced Yerjer Popiewooshko), was on his way back from taking part in a church service. Six days earlier he had narrowly avoided a serious accident, when men from the Communist government’s security service threw a brick at the windscreen of his Volkswagen. He had escaped unscathed from that attempt on his life, but knew that his enemies in the security service were unlikely to give up.
