The Old Bailey Proceedings Online (www.oldbaileyonline.org) is a fully searchable, digitised collection of over 197,000 trials which took place in London’s Central Criminal Court between 1674 and 1913. It has biographical details of approximately 2,500 men and women who were executed at Tyburn (near modern-day Marble Arch in West London).

The site, which is accessible without a subscription, can be used to browse editions of the proceedings by session, search for particular offences or individuals, or create graphs and tables for statistical analysis. Contemporary maps locate the scene of particular crimes or defendants’ homes. It provides much more than a dry analysis of crime and punishment in the period, giving a rich social history of London and a flavour of how ordinary people lived.
