The West India Regiments

Discover how regiments of black soldiers played a crucial role throughout the nineteenth century

The British Library, working with a team of academics at The University of Warwick, has created an online learning resource for schools on the West India Regiments (www.bl.uk/west-india-regiment). These regiments were first created in 1795 and existed until 1927. Unlike other regiments in the British army, these regiments were made up of black soldiers, and they served in both the West Indies and in Africa helping to secure new territories for the British empire.

The online resource is aimed at students studying themes relating to race and empire. There are eight individual components:
