At the end of the nineteenth century, Japan transformed itself from an agrarian feudal country to a modern nation-state and imperial power. This article examines the rise of modern Japan. How and why did Japan modernise itself and become an imperial power relatively quickly at this point in history? What did it mean to East Asia and the rest of the world? The Sino-Japanese War of 1894–5 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–5 are key to understanding the process of Japan’s early expansionism.
