Dr Kimberly Springer

Dr Kimberly Springer is an academic, a script writer and a blogger. Until recently she was Senior Lecturer in American Studies at King’s College in London. Her most recent publication, Do You Remember Olive Morris?, marked the culmination of an oral history project celebrating the life and work of Olive Morris, a radical activist and member of the British Black Panther Movement. She has also written Stories of Oprah: the Oprahfication of American Culture. Springer is now Associate Professor at the Department of Women’s Studies, Ohio State University.

KS Technically, I’m an interdisciplinary scholar, more specifically a social science historian. I decided to pursue this field of research after becoming involved with a number of anti-racist and feminist organisations as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Social movements captivated me: why do people join them? What makes people care enough to put their bodies on the line in pursuit of an ideal? What does societal transformation mean for people? These questions still motivate my research and teaching.
