Russia and the USSR 1941–91: Unit HIS3K

The 50-year period between 1941 and 1991 was one of volatile change in the USSR. The Great Patriotic War caused untold damage to the country, followed by rapid recovery, until a slow decline took hold. There were events that had a huge impact both on the USSR and the rest of the world: Stalin’s death and destalinisation, the space race and the Cold War, and the break-up of the USSR. Communist leaders dating back to the early days of the party — Stalin, Khrushchev and Brezhnev — were eventually succeeded by a new generation epitomised by Gorbachev.

The examination contains three essay questions and you must answer two of them. This exam gives you an opportunity to demonstrate that you can communicate the knowledge and understanding that you have learned in this unit as well as the historical skills you have accumulated over your entire A-level course.
