Dr Sophia Deboick

Paul Tait

Dr Sophia Deboick is a historian and freelance writer. Her work tends to relate historical themes to contemporary topics. One aspect of her work looks at the connections between pop culture and religion. In this context she has examined fan cults, contemporary music and religion. She has recently written articles for the Guardian on the ‘French Elvis’ Johnny Hallyday, and pieces on music for the pop culture website ‘The Quietus’.

SD I was always really interested in history as a child, and was strongly influenced by my dad, who was involved in an English Civil War re-enactment society and is still a keen amateur military historian. I can also trace my enthusiasm for history back to doing a school project on the Spanish Armada when I was about 7, when we visited Tilbury Fort (thank you to my teacher, Mrs Storey, for organising that!) The drama of the place made a real impression on me, and it was the same when I later visited the Tower of London with my parents.
