Sarah van Wely considers how social factors shaped the characteristics of, and participation in, sport in twentieth-century Britain

By the 1960s, television coverage of sport was modest and confined to terrestrial stations

L et's start by looking at Britain's sporting landscape in the first half of the twentieth century (i.e. from 1900 to the 1960s), before examining the vastly different sporting scene that had emerged by 2000. By the year 2000, 38% of competitors in the Sydney Olympic Games were female, British sport was losing much of its autonomy to big business, societal class boundaries had become more blurred andet’s s tart by looking at Britain’s most people were taller, heavier and lived longer than their grandparents.

The timeline on pp. 16–17 includes entries shaped by the social factors listed on the specification related to women in sport. It will hopefully be an interesting backdrop of context and provide useful examples for you to relate to.
