Setting goals in sport

John Ireland addresses the effectiveness of goal setting and explains the value of target formulation both in raising confidence and controlling anxiety

Goal setting is relevant to the skill/sport psychology sections of the AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications.

To use a metaphor first outlined by Brendan Foster, British distance runner and founder of the Great North Run, extended sporting goals are supported by a structure, just as the compilation of a jigsaw is reliant on the installation of a surrounding framework. Similarly, progress towards sporting aspirations and the process of filling the jigsaw framework do not follow logical patterns. Areas of the board remain undeveloped for long periods, while other sections of the composition fit together straight away:
