Steph Houghton’s football journey

Ahead of Euro 2022, the England captain talks about how elite women’s football has developed during her career, from training twice a week to full-time professionalism

Ithink my love of football came from my dad really — my earliest memory is playing football in the back yard with my dad. In terms of other girls I played with, they obviously loved football, but at the same time when it came to choosing who would be on a five-a-side team the boys would probably pick me, because they knew that I would get stuck in, which I still try and take into my games now.

Growing up, my main interest and potential career was in sport — probably as a PE teacher. PE was pretty much the only lesson I really did like, but my parents were really strong on me getting an education and a degree, because at the time women’s football wasn’t as big as it is now, so that’s really stood me in good stead.
