SA: Did you enjoy refereeing right from the start in grassroots football? We hear quite a lot about aggressive, negative parents on the sidelines. Was that something that you had to experience as a young referee?

SME: I don’t think so. I just really enjoyed refereeing youth football, because I’ve seen it as being a coach to some of the players. You know, I’d see a foul throw, which is quite a common thing that we see in grassroots football. You know that the boys and girls don’t keep their feet on the floor, and they jump and that kind of thing. I think I saw it as my job to educate them. I think that’s my background and I quite liked the coaching aspect of refereeing youth football. So, I kind of used to go over to them and show them how to take a correct throw in rather than just penalise it. I think as a youth referee you are more than just a referee.
