The energy continuum

TopFoto

When we start exercising, the demand for energy rises rapidly. All three energy systems (ATP– PC, lactic acid, aerobic) contribute during all types of activity but one of them will be the predominant energy provider.

The intensity and duration of the activity are the factors that decide which energy system will be dominant. For example, jogging is a long duration submaximal exercise so the aerobic system will be the predominant energy system. An explosive, short duration activity such as the 100 m will use the ATP–PC system. However, in a game there will be a mix of all three energy systems and the performer will move from one energy system to another depending on the effort applied and the rate at which energy is used.
