Physics Review

Volume 19 Number 1 September 2009

Welcome to PHYSICS REVIEW magazine. Our main aim is to support your study of physics and help you do well in your course. Broadly, there are two approaches to maximising success with physics — or any other subject. One is to find out exactly what you need to learn for assessment, focus on those requirements and put a lot of effort into practising exam questions. The other is to read, talk and above all think about physics and its applications and implications so that it becomes a natural part of your life. Follow up ideas that interest you, regardless of whether they will be tested, link them to things you already know, and speculate about where they might lead. This second approach is both more enjoyable than the first and very effective. It will help you develop a genuine understanding that will help you do well in exams and provide an excellent preparation for any further study or career that relates to physics. PHYSICS REVIEW will help with both approaches to exam success.

For the second approach this magazine is an ideal resource. In each issue you will find articles on a range of topics, and at the top of each is a ‘physics focus’, alerting you to the relevant physics. In this issue you can find out how wave power might be harnessed to generate electricity (physics focus: energy, waves, electricity generation), and how electrical safety devices work (DC circuits), and you can read about the Cassini mission to Saturn and Cassini’s on-board energy supply (radioactive decay). In each magazine Picture page presents a topic mainly in pictures and diagrams, and in most issues there is a Crossword whose solutions link to mini-articles on physics-related matters. We also have a regular Physics online column that points you towards interesting physics-based websites and podcasts.
