It is often said that mathematics is the language of physics, but consider the following:

◆ An AS physics class in England included some Chinese students. One had been in the UK since the start of secondary school and another had just arrived that year. The second student was struggling with some new ideas in physics so the teacher asked the first to explain in their common first language (Cantonese). The first student said she was unable to do this as she had learnt all her physics in English.
