Robert Boyle (1627–91) was a careful experimentalist who helped pave the way for modern science by reporting clear details of his experiments so that other people could repeat and check his work. Two of his experiments concerned columns of liquid supported by atmospheric pressure. The maximum height h of liquid that can be supported is given by
